Why AI agents needs a new kind of money
The infrastructure assumption underneath most internet payment systems is that a human is on one end of the transaction. Payment forms ask for names and addresses. Checkout flows require decisions. Even API billing, which feels automated, is fundamentally designed around humans who set up accounts, review invoices, and manage credit cards on a dashboard.
AI agents break that assumption entirely. An agent browsing the web, querying data sources, and assembling research does not fill in a form. It cannot receive an invoice and approve it next Tuesday. It needs to pay at the moment of access, programmatically, as part of the same process that makes the request. If the payment infrastructure does not support that, the agent either cannot access the resource or the resource cannot monetise the access.
The x402 protocol addresses this directly. Built on the HTTP standard the web already runs on, x402 allows any server to return a payment requirement as part of a normal web response. The agent detects the requirement, pays in the same request cycle, and gets access. No account creation, no OAuth flow, no API key management. Payment becomes a native part of the web request rather than a separate process wrapped around it.
The currency matters too. Settling agentic transactions in an unregulated token introduces risk for both sides. For European businesses, settling in a dollar stablecoin means FX exposure on every payment and dependence on US financial infrastructure for transactions that are entirely European in nature. EURAU, as a MiCAR-regulated euro stablecoin, provides the settlement layer that makes x402 work within a compliant, euro-denominated framework. Proceeds land in an Agentic Collection Account and can be off-ramped to a standard bank account automatically.
AI agents are not just a new type of user. They represent a genuinely different relationship with money, one that requires payment infrastructure designed for machine-speed, machine-initiated transactions with no human in the loop. Building that infrastructure now, before agentic commerce reaches the scale that makes the gap critical, is what AllUnity's agentic payments solution is designed to do.
